I DIDN’T CREATE LOTTA LETTAS TO DECORATE A WALL.
I CREATED IT TO HELP PUT MYSELF BACK TOGETHER.
Hurricane Katrina gave me a taste of true trauma, to put it mildly.
The trauma that led to decades of nightmares I still can’t find the words for.
(R.I.P. to all those we lost in Katrina and the aftermath.)
There was a moment some months after Katrina when I was truly and utterly alone. Needing help but ultimately facing the fact I’d have to help myself, I only had my photos and my poems… What could I do to help myself heal when all I had were the pictures plus a thousand words? Then it hit me… “I’m OK”
The first piece was a portrait of my own face made from the words I’M OK, repeated over and over. I placed it where I would see it every day because I needed those words directly in front of me.
Slowly, the message became true.
Then came I’M BETTER.
I’M FOCUSED.
I’M HEALING.
What started as one image became a wall of reminders. The artwork gave me a way to see, say, and believe what I was still becoming. I had supercharged my entire room. I had supercharged myself.
People would look at the work and think they were seeing a picture. Then they would get closer and realize the entire image was made from words.
It was really a lotta lettas.
That’s where Lotta Lettas Limited came from.
I know what it means to need the room around you to reinforce the work happening inside you. That’s why I create original typographic artwork for therapists, healers, and wellness-practice owners who want their space to say something more meaningful than “this wall needed a picture.”
